France has a strong history in gaming. You can find some of the oldest casinos or gambling establishments in the world in France. France played a part in developing some of the popular casino games we play in casinos today, like roulette.
The roulette wheel was invented by a French mathematician named Blaise Pascal in the 17th century. Although Pascal originally intended on the roulette wheel to only be a perpetual motion machine, it was later adapted to the famous game we play today.
France is also where the queen card became an official part of a playing deck in the 1500s. The queen replaced the nobleman.
The gambling age in France was changed from 21 to 18 in 1987, and slot machines became a legal game in 1988.
Online gambling in France was not legalized until 2010.
