When I first started writing about sports betting a few years ago, political betting wasn’t all that popular. It was sort of like esports – it served a niche audience.
And while I don’t have any hard data to support this, it seems to me that betting on political outcomes has become a bigger deal.
I can’t put my finger on the reason why, but if I had to guess, I’d say that a lot of it has to do with the current US President, Donald Trump.
Because – love him or hate him – you can’t deny that he knows how to get people talking about him. He makes up the majority of news headlines nowadays, between his plans to build a wall, trash talking other countries, and the size of his …manhood.
And bookmakers are having a field day with it.
Later on, in this article, you’ll see exactly what I mean. I’m going to show you all sorts of interesting markets you can bet on right now, piggybacking off the circus revolving around the current POTUS.
But that’s not all – you can bet on TONS of other stuff revolving around politics in the USA, as well as around the world. We’ll give you plenty of examples of markets sportsbooks are taking action on.
Before we get to all that, though, let’s start with our top picks for best political betting sites. The following have already been vetted for safety, reputation, betting options, etc. So, you can choose any one and know you’re going to have a great experience.

The amount of political coverage, as well as the variety and uniqueness of markets, varies a lot between sportsbooks. We recommend having accounts at 2-3 sportsbooks minimum (if your bankroll can handle it).
When I first heard about political betting, I assumed it was limited to whatever was going on in the United States.
That was pretty foolish of me, I can tell you that much. Bookies offer action on politics all around the world.
Here are some examples of what you can bet on:
Those are some of the bigger examples. But with a little bit of searching, you can find all sorts of events covered, from Australian state elections, Irish general elections, Scotland’s Next Independence Referendum, and more.
You’ll be able to make many of the same kinds of bets that are available for sports.
For Example:
There’s likely to be others, but from my limited experience, these betting types are the most common.
Here are some of the more interesting markets and betting opportunities I found during my research. There are TONS of them.
The following markets are political in nature due to controversy revolving around the National Anthem.
The NFL has made headlines recently for their players sitting or kneeling during the National Anthem. So, it’s no surprise to see so many betting opportunities revolving around it.
Notice how ridiculous some of these are. Can you imagine Trump having his face added to Mount Rushmore?
I can’t – it’s flipping ridiculous. But given all that Trump has said and done, can you put this sort of thing past him?
Some of these are interesting, too – like shipping the Statue of Liberty back. Others are entertaining as well, including who will win the Presidential Election. I saw options that included Mark Zuckerberg, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Oprah.
Can you imagine Oprah as the POTUS? “You get a state. And you get a state. And you get a state.”
These definitely aren’t as exciting as many of the markets focusing on the US. But this gives you an idea of the variety of political markets revolving around other countries that are more serious.
I’m not a sports betting expert, and politics is even further from my field of expertise. So, many of the following tips I found from bettors much smarter than myself.
The first set of tips comes from BestBettingOnline.com. The following are the things you need to consider when betting on politics:
You want to look to both the past and the future. How close is the scandal to the election? Will it hurt the candidate in question …or help them?
This is similar to sports, but if a candidate is hurt they cannot “play.” If they’re unable to make appearances, debates, etc., will this impact their chances? You’ve heard the saying, out of sight, out of mind…
BestBettingOnline.com says to think about whether the popular vote or the electoral voting system will come out ahead.
They say not to use the news or social media for your facts, because they often get them wrong. You should look up the facts yourself.
The home candidate will often have the advantage, like the home team in sports betting.
Who’s a better leader? Who’s more trustworthy, calm, confident, etc.?
What is the candidate saying they’re going to do while in office, and more importantly, does that match the interests or needs of the public. Not only that, but does the public believe that the candidate can and will do what they say?
Sticking to these won’t guarantee anything. But they may at least help you make more correct predictions than wrong ones.
Experts also say you should wait to place your bets until closer to the election, event, etc. The outcome should be a bit easier to predict, plus you should still be able to find some value.
Fun Fact! Apparently, Donald Trump was 600+ to win the Presidency at one point. Whoever bet on him then must’ve collected a small fortune.
And that’s it from other experts. And to wrap this section up, I’ll give you a few of my own tips and suggestions:
This isn’t so much to ‘line shop’ – though that IS important – but to give yourself the biggest selection of betting markets. You’ll find that many sportsbooks offer unique political betting opportunities.
For example, I’m looking at one sportsbook who has a max payout of $25,000 for novelty bets. Another I looked at is $20,000. And I’m sure with enough research you’ll find that the limits and rules can vary more than that. You’ll want to know what these are BEFORE you make a bet – probably before you create your account.
From here I suggest all the normal stuff – make sure a sportsbook is legit before joining; that they have banking options you can use; they offer a few promotions; and that you’ll have a good time.
Politics, like religion, is so polarizing. It’s difficult to find much middle ground.
This is why “they” – whoever that is – say not to discuss things like politics and religion at the dinner table. It’s unlikely to go well.
But political betting is a slightly different beast. Instead of talking about who you endorse, and finishing the “conversation” seconds later by calling each other names, you can have a fun chat about how you bet on the size of Donald Trump’s private parts, whether he’ll be impeached or the likelihood that the United States will ship Lady Liberty back to France.
And even if you don’t plan to discuss your betting with anyone, my opinion is that betting on political outcomes is a far more interesting and entertaining endeavor than politics itself.
Because at least you can make money from it.
